How to Pair Bluetooth Headset to PC, Mac and Linux

Getting wireless headphones was not the norm in the past decade; wired headsets were.

Fast forward a decade later, and every electronic store seems to place Bluetooth headsets on the front shelves.

You walked into an electronics store and grabbed a Bluetooth headphone, paid the cash and left.

The next phase: making use of your brand new gadget!

In this article, I’ll show you how to connect Bluetooth headphones to PC.

The method will include the pairing steps for Mac and Windows.

Some computers have Bluetooth support, while others don’t.

But no worries!

It is possible to pair either way, but you will have to check if your PC supports wireless pairing or not.

Checking PC Bluetooth support status

It is effortless to check if you can pair your headphones wirelessly to your device.

Mac

Mac users can follow the steps below.

1. Open the Menu screen

Click on the menu icon on the top left corner of the desktop page.

2. Select System preferences

From the list of options, click on System preferences.

3. Find the Bluetooth icon

If your device has a builtin Bluetooth radio, you will see a Bluetooth icon; otherwise, then you won’t see that icon.

Windows

Windows 7, 8, or 10 users can follow the procedure below to confirm if their PC supports Bluetooth connection.

1. Open device manager

On the desktop page, look for the search bar and type in device manager. Click it once it pops up.

2. Find the Bluetooth icon

There should be a list of devices installed in your PC. Find the Bluetooth option. If it’s there, then your device supports Bluetooth; otherwise, it doesn’t support it.

Each headphone brand has a different way of turning on its product. Look at your manual to confirm how yours work.

Most headphones either have a button you hold down for 5 seconds or a switch you toggle.

Windows

If you are running a Windows 10 device, then follow the instructions below to pair your device.

1. Open Windows Startup Menu

On the desktop page, hit the Windows button on your keyboard to open the startup menu.

2. Launch the Settings app

Click the gear button on the left side of the screen to open the settings page.

3. Select devices

The settings page has several options, click on Devices.

4. Add a Bluetooth device

On the following page, turn the Bluetooth on and click on add Bluetooth or other devices.

There should be a pop-up menu with some options. Click on Bluetooth and it should start searching for your device.

5. Select your headphone

Once it discovers your headphone, click on the name of your headset to start the connection.

Your device should connect successfully.

Mac

Macintosh users can pair their device using the instructions below.

1. Open the Mac Menu

Click on the menu icon on the top left corner of the desktop page.

2. Select System preferences

There will be a list of options, click System preferences.

3. Click on Bluetooth

On the following page, click the Bluetooth option.

4. Select your headphone

Your Mac should start searching for your headphone. Once it displays the name on the screen, click it and it will begin to pair.

You should get a message that the connection was successful.

Linux

Each Linux distro has a different setting.

1. Search for the Bluetooth page

Click the search bar on your desktop page and type in Bluetooth.

2. Add a Bluetooth device

Select add a Bluetooth device option. The option can be different depending on your distro.

3. Select your headset

It will start searching for your device. Click on the name of your headset, once it shows up on the screen, to begin pairing.

Your headphone should be connected successfully.

Pair Bluetooth headphones to a PC that doesn’t have a wireless radio

If your PC lacks Bluetooth connectivity, that is not the end of the road.

Look up Bluetooth dongle on Amazon or at your local electronics store.

NOTE: Every dongle looks different because each brand has a variant design.

Purchase it and insert it into the USB port on your PC.

Follow the steps above to pair the headphones with your PC, via the dongle.
